Welcome to Lab of the Future (LotF) Community of Interest

A research intensive industry like BioPharm brings together many excellent scientists and visionaries within individual companies. Freeing them from their highly competitive daily work and exposing them to speculative ideas of colleagues for a number of hours per months or year can be highly productive to find new approaches and solutions to common roadblocks.

Next LOTF Call Dates

About Us

Our objectives are growing but are primarily to drive positive pre-competitive outcomes that lead to better quality of life for recipients and all involved.  These include data and process standards, harmonised ways of working, and finally sharing of data , knowledge and intelligence.

We currently have 3 projects that are linked to the LOTF community: Methods Database, Universal Integration Knowledge Base and Methods on Demand.

Our Projects

Methods Database (Methods DB)
This project is in phase 2 and there is due to be a release at the of summer 2020. This release will detail 55 ontologies for digitally programming CDS systems.

Method recapitulation is difficult and time consuming, within a company and even more across collaborating partners. A solution to store, search and retrieve a digital version of a method will improve scientist’s ability to retain institutional knowledge, reduce time for method development and improve method execution.
We are building a standard based, semantically enabled framework handling HPLC data with two different CDS systems and HPLC instruments.

Key components are:

  • Method Model for LC UV Data Acquisition

  • Semantically enabled Methods Database

  • Human Readable Method visualising the machine instructions

  • Import/ Export capability for Agilent and Empower CDS

Universal Integration Knowledge Base(UIKB)

This project is in inception stage, interested parties are meeting regularly and funding is being raised.

System Integration and Automation in the Lab are still very expensive and time-
consuming. A public Lab Automation Wiki, providing key information for device
connectivity and data exchange, Integration Code snippets and successful Integration
projects shared across the Pharma community in a pre-competitive manner should
reduce the initial hurdle to start system and device integration in the Lab of the
Future.

Methods on Demand
This project is in development and is seeking interested parties to join the project and sponsorship team

Analytical Method Information comes in many different formats, from unstructured
text-based documents, via semi-structured tables with some metadata to fully digital
Method instruction sets that can be directly send to a Chromatographic Data System
(CDS).
Unstructured and semi-structured documents make the reliable exchange of Method
information very difficult and the recapitulation of a method very work intensive.

We want to build a bridge from the text based information to the instruction set in
CDS. The only link that exists here today is the Scientist converting the methodology
which introduces reproducibility errors and human mistakes.

The goals is to create a process that reduces errors, time and efforts in transferring
and translating of methods.
