Reimagining the eLNB

PROJECT NAME Reimagine ELN through pre-competitive global-wide collaborations

Background Many pharmaceutical companies are looking into adopting new technologies to improve the scientist's work efficiency in their R&D laboratories. One of the commonly used tools is the electronic Laboratory Notebook (eLNB), a multidisciplinary system that is meant to provide interfaces to the lab instruments and systems to easier capture, secure, find and reuse the information. By taking away the time-consuming steps associated with the manual transcriptions and paper file management, it helps the scientist dedicate more time to perform the scientific work.

Problem statement Although in theory the eLNBs present only advantages, the current concerns are related with their complete integration into the laboratory environment: their ability to store and mine highly contextual data, the timeliness of response, the IP concerns and the overall process harmonization and optimization.

Potential solutions The PIstoia Alliance is looking at 3 different workstream solutions to reimagine the eLNBs: 1. Data & Tech - looking at integrating all the instruments for sending analytical data directly into a single software platform (Live stream of data, Audio transcription, Full digitalization, AI and ML approaches) 2. Approval and implementation solutions - involvement of patent attorneys and legal counsels, RA and Quality experts; creating data standards, ontologies, taxonomies, data dictionaries; process harmonization and optimization 3. Change management solutions - understand, anticipate and overcome the challenges – looking at the “journey mentality”
