Quantum Computing Applications for Pharma

Pistoia Alliance Quantum Computing Community of Interest

Background to the CoI:

The Pistoia Alliance Strategy refresh initiative published a report entitled “2030 – Life Science and Healthcare go Digital”.  In that report the potential Quantum Computing (QC) might bring to the biopharmaceutical industry was signposted.

QC is likely to have a profound impact. Examples include enabling calculation of multiple probabilities and outcomes including ab initio drug design, precision medicine, accelerating genomics and proteomics correlations, as well as optimising supply chains for clinical trials, manufacturing, and indeed finished medicines distributions.

To explore the potential interest of QC to members, the Pistoia Alliance hosted a webinar in June 2020. Over 240 delegates attended. With this level of interest, the Pistoia Alliance, QuPharm and QED-C have come together to create QC4Pharm a community of interest (CoI) designed to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of biopharma R&D through the development and deployment of QC. Furthermore, consideration should be given to the application of QC to down-stream supply chain processes including manufacturing and finished product distribution.

Objectives of the CoI:

  1. To educate all stakeholders in the life sciences of the opportunities quantum computing can bring to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of its business processes.

  2. To identify key use cases that are, or will be, amenable to the impact of quantum computing and demonstrate quantum advantage.

  3. to support biopharma companies that need help navigating the pathway to QC and those companies in the QC sector that wish to understand the requirements and needs of the biopharmaceutical industry.

  4. to ensure that Pistoia Alliance members are positioned to deploy and gain value from the technology when QC becomes a stable and usable technology.

  5. to facilitate collaboration between stakeholders, propose new ideas for funded QC projects, including a life sciences Quantum Computing Challenge
