New Opportunities

HELM is designed to be extensible and there are opportunities for it to adapt. This area will contain ideas and proposals for changes to the standard.

Please let us know if you have any suggestions and especially if you want to help implement them in the open source tools.

We have achieved a lot in the past and are very keen to ensure HELM continues to meet the needs of the community.

Opportunitites

  • Glycan Extension

The HELM project has written a white paper describing how HELM can be extended to handle glycans as well as proteins and nucleotides.

A small amount of coding is required to implement this proposal in the open source tools and update the specification, so let us know if you are interested in helping.

  • Fragmentation - or polymers to monomers

Many organisations have macromolecule information in a variety of formats. Converting HELM to an atom/bond molecular representation is a relatively straightforward process since the monomers and attachment points between monomers are defined, so assembly is straightforward.

Converting an atom/bond representation to HELM is more complex, since you have to decide what the monomers are.
